Are You Ready to go Home?

Mark 13 tells of an event with Jesus and His disciples. They are talking about the temple and the massive stones that support the structure. The disciples feel like nothing can destroy those structures.

Then Jesus said: “Not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.” Mark 13:2(NIV)

Four of the disciple asked Jesus privately when the stones were going to be thrown down. They wanted some signs of this event.

Jesus said to them: “Watch out that no one deceives you. Many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am he,’ and will deceive many. When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines. These are the beginning of birth pains. Mark 13:5-8(NIV)

The Carpenters song “We’ve only just begun”

We’ve only just begun to live

White lace and promises

A kiss for luck and we’re on our way

(We’ve only begun)

Before the risin’ sun, we fly

So many roads to choose

We’ll start out walkin’ and learn to run

And yes, we’ve just begun

Sharing horizons that are new to us

Watching the signs along the way

Talkin’ it over, just the two of us

Workin’ together day to day

Together

And when the evening comes,

we smile So much of life ahead

We’ll find a place where there’s room to grow

And yes, we’ve just begun

Sharing horizons that are new to us

Watching the signs along the way

Talkin’ it over, just the two of us

Workin’ together day to day

Together

Together

And when the evening comes, we smile

So much of life ahead

We’ll find a place where there’s room to grow

And yes, we’ve just begun

Grammy Award for Song of the Year, 1970

This song started out as a bank commercial. Songwriters Paul Williams and Roger Nichols were commissioned by an advertising agency to write it in 1968 for Crocker Bank, which was trying to attract young people and newlyweds to their institution. (thanks, Brian – Funchal Madeira, Portugal)

The words of this song are true of our relationship with God. We are following new horizons, watching for signs, and making decisions together. The Christian are not making decisions by ourselves. God is helping us live our lives from day to day.

When Jesus died on the cross for our sin, God restores our relationship with him. Because of God’s grace, mankind has a restored relationship with God.

However, having a relationship with God does not mean that we will be free of any problems or persecutions. What it does mean is that God will bring us through those problems and persecutions.

When the disciples asked Jesus when the signs would be fulfilled this is what He told them: You will:

  • You will be handed over to the local councils
  • You will be flogged in the synagogues.
  • You will stand before governors and kings as witnesses to them
  • You will be arrested and brought to trial.
  • Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child.
  • Children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death.
  • Everyone will hate you because of me,

“When you see ‘the abomination that causes desolation’ standing where it does not belong—let the reader understand—then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. Let no one on the housetop go down or enter the house to take anything out. Let no one in the field go back to get their cloak. How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! Pray that this will not take place in winter, because those will be days of distress unequaled from the beginning, when God created the world, until now—and never to be equaled again.  Mark 13:14-19(NIV).

There will be false messiahs and prophets that will deceive the world with signs and wonders:

  • The sun becomes dark
  • The moon will not give light
  • The stars will fall from the sky
  • The Heavenly bodies will be shaken.

Then you will see the Son of Man coming in the clouds with great power and glory. The angels will gather the believers. We will be going home where we belong.

The end of time has been planned by God. It is not a time when random acts take place and the world gradually falls apart. It is God’s plan. Because He has the plan, Christians will be taken to heaven where they will live forever. We do not need to know an exact date and time the world will end because those who are followers of Christ will be cared for regardless of when it happens.
