Who Are You following?

Here is an interesting piece of information. 2 Corinthians 3:17 says: Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.  For us to have true freedom according to this verse, we must possess the Spirit of the Lord.

We have two forces in this country: The forces of the flesh and the forces of the Spirit of the Lord.

Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God. Romans 8:5-8(NIV)

Those controlled by the flesh, are hostile to God, do not submit to God, cannot please God, and will experience death. On the other hand, those controlled by the Spirit, will have life and peace.

So…if we want peace in this country we need to follow the Spirit and pray that our government leaders will follow the Spirit, not necessarily pray that they are kicked out of office.

What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures. James 4:1-3(NIV)

You may say that you have been praying for the governmental leaders… but God doesn’t seem to be listening. Perhaps you are praying with the ‘wrong motives’? Are you praying that God will let you continue to live the same way you were living several years ago? Or are you praying that God will use this country for His glory? Secondly, are you depending on the power of the Holy Spirit, or are you depending on your own power to change the government?

Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended. For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience. Romans 13:1-5(NIV)

Since God is spirit and God has appointed the leaders of our country, it would seem logical that we would respond to government in a spiritual realm. Perhaps God has placed our currently leadership in office so we will follow the Holy Spirit rather than man?

Our peace and hope does not come from government…it comes from God. Romans 15:13(NIV) says: May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
